Polygon (POL, formerly MATIC) and Arbitrum are the two largest Ethereum scaling solutions by adoption. They take very different architectural approaches — Polygon has multiple chains and a zk-roadmap, Arbitrum is the leading optimistic rollup. Their social comparison reveals which architecture is winning narrative share.
What the comparison reveals
Architectural attention. Polygon’s social discussion is fragmented across products (PoS chain, zkEVM, Polygon CDK, AggLayer). Arbitrum’s is more unified around the rollup and Orbit framework. Sentiment differences often reflect which architecture is being engaged with.
Velocity asymmetry. Polygon’s baseline volume is large but slowly fading. Arbitrum’s baseline is smaller but more reactive. A 1.5× ARB velocity is more notable than a 1.5× POL velocity in absolute terms.
Narrative orbit. Both participate in the L2 narrative but Polygon also touches the institutional narrative (Polygon partnerships with Disney, Stripe, etc.). Arbitrum is more DeFi-coupled.
What to watch
- POL velocity above 2× with neutral sentiment = institutional partnership announcement.
- ARB velocity rising with positive sentiment during a DeFi heat moment = the DeFi narrative is lifting it.
- Both fading together = scaling-solution attention has rotated to ZK or to alt-L1s.
