The AI and DePIN narratives are often described together as “the deep-tech crypto themes,” but they trade attention very differently. Watching them side-by-side is one of the cleanest ways to read where narrative capital is flowing.
What the comparison reveals
Different participation breadth. The AI narrative is fed by a wide cluster of tokens (the inference, agents, training, and AI-tooling sub-narratives all flow into it). DePIN is concentrated in a smaller group of tokens with stronger per-asset social loyalty. When AI’s heat rises with broad asset participation, it’s a real rotation; when DePIN’s heat rises, it’s often a single token catalyst.
Momentum cadence. AI heat tends to move in slower, multi-week cycles synced to broader tech news flow (model releases, conferences). DePIN moves faster and is more responsive to individual project milestones (network rollouts, hardware shipping).
Heat-vs-momentum gap. A frequent pattern: AI heat sustained at 70+ while DePIN heat climbs from 40 into the 60s with steep momentum. The DePIN narrative is the more interesting one to investigate in that configuration — the AI conversation is already crowded.
When this view matters
- Mid-cycle rotations between deep-tech themes.
- Spotting which narrative is currently absorbing attention from the other.
- Identifying assets that bridge both narratives (some L1s and oracle projects sit in both clusters).
